A young girl named Tara* was living in a slum in Delhi when her life took a terrible turn. She was lured by a woman who kept her locked up and forced her into a life of begging. Eventually, the woman sold Tara to a man who bought her for his son, and Tara moved in with the son and his parents. During her time with the son, Tara faced unimaginable horrors and endured physical abuse from the son and his parents. Tara managed to escape and was brought to the police station by some compassionate individuals in August 2012.
A Justice Hub partner stepped in to pursue the legal case against the son’s family, working tirelessly to document Tara’s experience and support the recording of crucial evidence. Finally, after a long wait, justice was served on August 29, 2019 when all three accused -the son and his parents – were convicted. The parents were sentenced to five years in prison, while the son received a ten-year sentence. In addition, due to the efforts of another Justice Hub partner, Tara received compensation of 5,00,000 rupees ($590 USD) for the trauma she endured.
Tara has made a remarkable recovery, having the courage to return to school and obtain a job in embroidery and sewing. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of our collective strength in the fight for justice.
