Intervening to Change a Family’s Fate

A Justice Hub’s efforts to come alongside a family in need has likely changed the course of its future.

Back in June, a Delhi Justice Hub partner intercepted Ram and Shyam* (ages 11 and 15) at a bus terminal. They were searching for work, putting them at significant risk of child labor and exploitation. It was revealed that Ram and Shyam’s family had been displaced from their home due to major construction. As a result, they lost everything and were struggling to meet their basic needs, prompting the children to seek work. The father’s prolonged illness rendered him unable to work, and the mother’s income as a domestic worker was insufficient to cover their living expenses. Recognizing their vulnerability, the Justice Hub partner initiated a support process that identified food insecurity as a critical issue and provided the family with a food ration kit. This support will continue for several months until the family can access the Public Distribution System for sustained assistance. Additionally, the Justice Hub team enrolled the younger siblings in a center for early childhood care and are planning to enroll the older children in school or skills development courses. Moving forward, the Justice Hub partner will continue to support the family, focusing on empowering them through skill-building opportunities and linking them with community resources. These efforts aim to foster long-term self-sufficiency, protect the children from future risks of child labor and exploitation, and promote the family’s overall well-being.
