The fear of shame and ostracism from the community weighed heavily on the families of two minor girls who had been rescued from the grip of a sex trafficker just two years earlier. Thankfully, Justice Hub partners had stepped in as the perpetrators conducted the transaction that would have sent the girls to the sex trafficking underground. However, even though the girls were safely back home, the stigma wrought by this ordeal hung like a cloud over their lives. Thus, their families attempted to marry the girls off to avoid further shame.
The girls, however, did not want to be married off – they wanted an education.
They reached out to Justice Hub social workers for help. The Justice Hub team involved with the uphill battle of rehabilitation began to counsel the girls and their families to pursue schooling.
After two years of hard work, not only did these girls beat the odds by staying in school, but they excelled on their high school exams. One girl is determined to study to become a nurse, now that she has scored high results on her high school exam. The parents no longer view the girls as burdens and a source of shame but rather encourage them to reach for the sky, as they take pride in their daughters’ success.
