In 2019, Savita* was rescued by JVI and local partners from a brick kiln where she was physically and racially abused. Savita was one of many women and men who were forced to work more than 12 hours a day with little to no pay and denied basic human rights. Following the rescue, JVI aftercare teams closely coordinated with Savita and her husband to secure monetary compensation from the government.

Savita found work on a local farm where she received fair wages. Within two years, she saved up enough money to build a house. And at just 20 years old she decided to run for an elected position as a member of the local village council.

This position comes with many responsibilities and duties. Such positions of power are usually won by older male members of a community.

In December of 2021, Savita, a 20 year old female survivor of bonded labor, defied all odds and won this post with overwhelming majority!

Savita’s passion to make a difference stems from the burden she carries for victims of human trafficking. Having been a victim herself, Savita wishes that no one, especially her children, endure the same hardships she did. With this hope, Savita contested for elections and came out victorious.

Her unwavering determination was evident throughout her election campaign and people believed in her resolve to bring about positive change.

Savita’s jurisdiction covers close to 100 households. In her role, she works to ensure there are jobs and that projects are undertaken for overall development of the village. Her latest project is to ensure that water tanks are built in the village so that residents have access to clean water at all times.
