Rescued, Restored, and Rising: A 14-Year-Old’s Journey to Freedom

In the dim light of a cramped bangle bracelet factory in Delhi, Suman Yadav* leaned over to stir a meal in a pot that was too heavy for his small frame. The factory air burned with chemical fumes and his hands and face were stained with dye, but Suman moved quickly to avoid the factory owner’s ire. Suman had never been to school. Instead, he worked twelve-hour shifts doing dangerous, exhausting work and then cooked for himself and other children working in the factory. This was his world, until the day hope arrived.

Freedom
In February 2025, after weeks of careful investigation, a Delhi Justice Hub partner joined forces with local authorities in a daring rescue. Suman and nine other children, their innocent faces marked by fatigue and chemical dyes, were freed from their long months – and in some cases, years – of toiling at the factory. When confronted, the factory owner admitted that these children endured 12-hour shifts, lived on site, and had never stepped into a classroom. For the first time in months, Suman stepped outside without fear.

Justice
Freedom alone wasn’t enough. Justice Hub lawyers brought Suman’s case before the Child Welfare Committee to secure his legal protection and pursue charges against his exploiters. A bank account was opened in his name, guaranteeing he could receive future government compensation or court-ordered compensation. These important procedural steps laid the groundwork for long-term security and sent a clear message that the exploitation of children will not be tolerated.

Restoration
From the moment of rescue, Suman began to rebuild his life. He received medical care for the physical toll he endured, nourishing meals to restore his strength, and counseling to help heal the emotional wounds of exploitation. Most importantly, Suman’s dream of attending school became possible. With encouragement from Justice Hub social workers, his family agreed to enroll him in classes. Today, he walks toward a future filled with learning, hope, and the chance to flourish. Suman’s story is proof of what happens when compassion meets action.
