Reclaiming Dignity and Self-Reliance After Bondage

Geeta’s* ordeal into bonded labour at a Rajasthan brick kiln began in September of 2021, when she and her husband and fourteen other families were transported under false promises to a world of perpetual debt bondage. The workers accepted meager amounts for vital expenses and unwittingly fell prey to an inescapable cycle of indebtedness. They worked sixteen hours per day and endured verbal abuse, denial of the minimum wages dictated by law, and dismal living conditions where they were deprived of basic necessities.

On May 6, 2022, a collaborative effort of JVI Justice Hub partners, the local government, and the National Human Rights Commission led to the rescue of Geeta and the fourteen families. Their release marked a pivotal moment toward freedom and restoration.

After the rescue, Justice Hub partners worked tirelessly to ensure continuous support and guidance for the survivors in their reintegration. Empowered by the aftercare team, Geeta delved into poultry farming, an initiative that not only provided a livelihood but also helped her reclaim her dignity and self-reliance. The ripple effect of this initiative extended beyond the individuals directly affected. The community, once trapped in bonded labour, have witnessed the transformative power of freedom, justice, and restoration. Her growing success in poultry farming is a testament to her commitment to remain free and not take her freedom for granted.
