For generations, this community comprised of the most socio-economically disadvantaged sub-castes within the Dalit community endured the harsh realities of agricultural bonded labour—no legal identities, rights, or access to basic necessities like food, healthcare, and education. Trapped in poverty, their lives revolved around relentless labour while children grew up deprived of the opportunity to learn or break free from this cycle. Their lack of any government identification documents ensured they would remain invisible, excluded from vital services and stripped of their voice in society.
241 Individuals Rescued
The turning point came in 2021 when a JVI Justice Hub rescued 43 families from this community (241 individuals, including 100 children) and helped them obtain legal identification documents. This was a critical step that opened the door to accessing rights and government resources that had long been denied. For the first time, these families felt seen, acknowledged, and hopeful for a brighter future.
Government Documentation and Services
As a result of this intervention, the community began experiencing significant improvements in multiple areas. Having official identification allowed them to benefit from government welfare programs, including those that provided food for families. Regular health camps organized by the Madhubani Justice Hub provided life-saving treatments and critical health education. Through a government health insurance program, families could now receive proper medical care, which was especially vital for pregnant women and children. Economic independence emerged as the community pursued sustainable livelihood through kitchen gardening, goat rearing, and tree planting. With support from an agricultural science center, survivors received training and resources to ensure long-term success. Education, once only a dream for most children, became a reality as children who had never set foot in a classroom were enrolled in schools and set on a path to pursue their aspirations and break free from generational poverty.
Economic Flourishing
The most profound change is the sense of empowerment within the community. They now advocate for their rights, navigating government offices and claiming the many benefits to which they are entitled. A community that once lived in fear is finding the courage to make the most of its newfound freedom.
