On October 23, 2024, a Justice Hub partner rescued Sudha* and her four children from a grim toy factory in Northeast Delhi. This family had been enduring grueling conditions and was forced to work over 12 hours a day for a meager weekly wage of Rs. 500 ($5.87). The factory owner subjected them to physical assault and sexual harassment, and Sudha and her children showed visible signs of the torment, malnutrition and exhaustion.
After the rescue, Sudha was placed in a facility dedicated to supporting victims of exploitation. Her children were temporarily placed in an aftercare facility, where they could begin the recovery process in a nurturing environment. Recognizing the urgent need for permanent housing, a Justice Hub partner promptly took action by renting a modest home for Sudha and her children and covering the costs, to ensure the family had a stable living environment. The partner also provided essential items such as food, clothing, and personal care products to help them gain a sense of normalcy.
Beyond providing these immediate needs, the Justice Hub team worked diligently to secure identification documents for the family, which are crucial for accessing government services and employment opportunities. The children were enrolled in school, allowing them to resume their studies and dream of a brighter future. In addition, bank accounts were opened for the children to manage their savings and support their educational aspirations. Finally, the team worked to recover the back wages owed to Sudha and her children for the work they performed, which will not only provide restitution but will also hold the perpetrators accountable for the criminal actions against the family. This holistic approach of tending to Sudha and her children’s immediate welfare while taking steps to ensure long-term stability is likely to result in better re-integration for this family.
