Overcoming Trauma to Confront Her Trafficker

When Nazia* was rescued in December 2023 from a railway station in Patna, she was suffering from mental instability due to the brutalities she had faced when held captive as a sex trafficking victim. She was placed in a center for trauma recovery and psychiatric treatment. The Gaya Justice Hub team regularly checked up on her and her family, establishing a bond of trust, and with regular counseling Nazia recovered and developed a positive outlook on life. After five months of counseling and treatment, she felt prepared to give her statement to the police and in court.

The Justice Hub aftercare team and her father accompanied Nazia to the police station to provide statements against the accused, and she then went to court where she bravely identified the accused and testified against him. This was a remarkable feat of courage that developed because of the hard work done by both Nazia and the aftercare team to restore Nazia’s confidence and sense of security. Her ability to face those who harmed her indicates a spirit that refuses to be broken.
