87 Released From Brick Kiln Outside Delhi

June 24, 2022 | JVI

This summer your gift goes further to support freedom, justice, and restoration for survivors of human trafficking and other extreme injustice.
Thanks to a few generous supporters, all gifts received by August 31, are being matched, up to $400,000! The funds raised will be put to work immediately to bring sustained freedom to thousands of children, women, and men, like these 22 families who were recently rescued from slavery in a brick kiln.

On April 25, 2022, JVI and one of its local partners coordinated with police to rescue 87 survivors, representing 22 families, from forced labor slavery in a brick kiln located on the outskirts of Delhi. The survivors were trafficked from the neighboring state of Bihar and were taken to the brick kiln in the fall of 2021.

The survivors suffered physical and verbal abuse, were restricted from leaving the site, and worked 12 hour days. They were paid a meager amount of about $1.25 per family, per day for a typical family of 4-6 people. They were penalized for bricks damaged by rain or natural calamity during counting. In addition, they were charged for supplies such as firewood and medicine.

After the rescue, survivors were safely transported back to their villages. JVI’s legal team is working closely with the police and prosecutors to ensure the traffickers are held accountable and that the survivors secure government rehabilitation assistance. Our aftercare team has already begun assessing the needs of each family to help them find housing, dignified jobs and schooling for the children.

Stories of hope are made possible because of friends like you who give generously to support this work.

There are millions of children, women and men around the world with similar stories. Help us change their story one life at a time.
