Musician Andy Williams got it right in his famous Christmas song, It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! Along with Williams, I hope your holiday season is filled with “parties for hosting, marshmallows for roasting and caroling out in the snow.” Mostly I hope you enjoy time and traditions with your loved ones, friends and family while reflecting on the amazing gift of a humble child born in a stable.
We all want the holidays to be more meaningful and they can be. We live in a world of extreme contrasts. The stunning beauty of the sky, the fierce love for a child, the perfect meal with a friend; contrasted with the extreme injustice of a young child forced to work 10 hours a day in a windowless factory, or a young woman, far from her home, abused in unspeakable ways in a red light district. Sometimes because we cannot personally solve these problems we choose to ignore them. There is a better way. We can enter in, even in a small way, and together, by the grace of God, children can be rescued, lives can be redeemed and eventually systems can be transformed.
Justice Ventures International celebrated our ten-year anniversary this year. Thanks to you and the dedicated work of our staff and partners, girls were rescued from the sex trade, mothers and fathers suffering in slums were protected from violence and abuse, and young boys were freed from forced labor slavery. But there is still so much work to be done. We would like to open more local offices in Asia and hire more lawyers, investigators and staff, thereby dramatically expanding our work and impact.
A small investment by U.S. standards will have a dramatic effect on the scale and reach of our work. For example, over the last 10 years, JVI’s proven model has directly impacted over 25,000 lives for the better while indirectly impacting thousands more on an ongoing basis through our local justice partners. These achievements were realized with an annual operating budget of less than one million dollars. Imagine how many more men, women and children suffering in slavery or other extreme abuse could experience new life and freedom if we could double or even triple this modest budget in the next few years.
